You turn on the computer, you get all comfortable and start browsing Facebook. You see a post about God, or food, or politics, whatever tickles your fancy, and you share it. you wait and soon you see that you have a comment from that ONE FRIEND.  You know, the one who seems to look for confrontation in every post! Then there is always that one person (at least one!) In every blog post or YouTube video comments who has nothing but mean, and insulting things to say!

How to we deal with these people when we feel we can’t just ignore their trolling ways!?

Well first we must remember that they are probably doing it for the sole purpose of getting people worked up and angry. So responding to them at all may be a lost cause. I say choose your battles.

When we just HAVE to respond, remember, the classic “WWJD“! If no one has ever seen or heard that one before (which I doubt) it means WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?!

What would he do? Would he respond to a post claiming that he isnt real by saying, “YOU STUPID IGNORANT FOOL! WTH IS WRONG WITH YOU?!? DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING SHOVED UP YOUR BUTT?!?!?!”

No, he would probably say something like

“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.(2 Peter 3:9)

That’s right, he would wait. He would pray “forgive them for they know not what they do” and he would wait. He would respond in loving kindness, excreting every ounce of love in his soul for that person into words and giving them no choice but to either (1) Feel his love and come running into his arms, or (2) harden their hearts and get even more angry. Either way you look at it though, you got to them! There was a seed planted that you dont even think about while you are in the heat of discussion. When someone can be so mean, even directly to you, and you speak words of love, kindness, and forgiveness, then that will eat them up inside (like God intended). It may not happen, but maybe, just maybe, that one little seed will lead them to salvation a year, a month, or a week down the road! Maybe it will take years, but hey! At least you don’t HAVE to deal with the negativity if you don’t want!

I was always the girl in school giving pencils to my bullies when they needed it. Why? Because when I looked around, no matter who hurt me, they were my “friends” and that may seem like cruel torture, but honestly, it tortured them. I look back and I see the people who have teased me my whole life up until now either coming to be saved by Christ, or falling very very far from grace and are very unhappy in their lives. So this is not exclusive to the internet bullies, this is to all bullies and “trolls” everywhere!!!

John 13:34-35

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Kill them with kindness, and shove forgiveness where they cant forget it!!!!! Into their hearts!!!

1 Corinthians 11:1-2

Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you.

  1. It has been my experience that those who try to bully are afraid that if they don’t appear to be stronger than some one else they will appear to be very weak indeed. Sad as it may be this route to trying to achieve approval is never a very satisfying one and more often than not leads to a very lonely existence. Things done motivated by fear will not obtain lasting satisfaction. What you do to others gets returned to you, love and loving expression, building others up instead of trying to tear them down is much more profitable. Speaking in tongues is profitable to you, but in the church all things are to be done so that all receive edification I Co 14. Build yourself up in your private prayer life so that your ability to give is not dependent on what others think about you, but rather knowing that God thinks highly of you. You can bring your self to being that beacon of joy and rejoicing that comes from knowing the truth that makes people free from the need to bully. Remembering how devoid of meaning the bullies life is may help you deal with their lack of understanding of how to relate to those they contact. Selah.
